Kenya

Spending a month in Nairobi supporting the Ruben Centre in the Mukuru kwa Ruben slum was one of the most rewarding and inspiring months of my life. The joy and tenacity of people with next to nothing was incredible and a constant reminder of the privilege and freedom we forget we have. We worked with the teachers, children and management to transform as many corners of the school into play opportunities as we could.

We used the childrens' ideas and made the most of the art teachers ability, to paint an amazing village for imaginative play. We also created a geodesic dome, tire climbing structures, a giant tile slide, traditional huts, sandpits, hopscotch courts, swings, tunnels, an obstacle course through the trees and a seesaw airplane! This may seem like a lot, but for a school with 2,000 primary aged children it was much needed and incredibly well utilised.
